Recently, I was commissioned to do a portrait of a young man and his dog who reside in Maryland. I had to work with photos that I did not take myself, which always poses a challenge, especially when an iPhone is used and distorts the shape of the face.
The writer who commissioned the painting imagined the subject as a young page in a hat, and so with that I decided to go full Jacobean, while still adding a few punk rock elements here and there.
Jimmy and Bobby, are done in oils on linen, 14×18 inches. Although many years ago I had done maybe two paintings with dogs in them, this here is in fact my first time painting a dog portrait. It always seems to be cats and that’s just how it rolls. But, I think he turned out really well and it came easily.
